Supporting Children and Family Life
Mothers' Union has a proud history of speaking out on issues concerning children and family life and through our successful Bye Buy Childhood campaign we have highlighted our belief that children should be valued as children, not consumers.
Mothers’ Union launched the Bye Buy Childhood campaign in 2010 to challenge the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood. We spoke to MPs, petitioned the Prime Minister and carried out awareness raising across the UK & Ireland. Shortly after the launch, Mothers' Union's then Chief Executive, Reg Bailey, was commissioned by the Government, to carry out an independent review into the issue. In 2015 a follow up report was published by us. Both can be found here
Since then, we have seen significant action taken by Parliament, industry and regulators to ensure that marketing and goods aimed at children are appropriate; to protect and build resilience within children as they engage with the commercial world; to support parents and carers in managing the impact of the commercial world; and to change the commercialised and sexualised landscape of modern life.
This 2016, we have published an updated version of our Labelled for Life resource which we will be launching in Parliament on Monday 14th November. The updated booklet offers advice and support to parents and other family members on managing the influence and impact of the commercial world on children; highlighting different methods used by advertisers, marketers and the media and offering suggestions on issues such as online safety.
The booklet will be available from 14th November 2016, priced at £2 each and then £1.50 a booklet for multiples of 10 (10 copies for £15).
To celebrate Safer Internet Day (7th February) Labelled for Life is available to download for FREE for a limited period:
